Kake Adapts

The Organized Village of Kake is currently in the process of creating an adaptation plan with the goal of “helping make Keex Kwaan a safe, healthy, and prosperous place to live 7 generations from now”. The adaptation plan will address the predicted changes in Kake, including more extreme weather events, oceans becoming warmer and more acidic, and an increase in heat wave events and warmer temperatures. The methods for the project include hosting community potlucks followed by discussion, as well as input from community surveys. The project has been made possible by funding from the Climate Smart Communities Initiative, Federal Award NA23OAR4310630 by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the U.S. Department of Commerce.

The comprehensive adaptation plan is building off the work done since 2020 by the Kake Climate Partnership. This partnership was formed with the Organized Village of Kake, Kake Tribal Corporation, the City of Kake, and Alaska Center of Climate Adaptation and Preparedness (ACCAP). The Kake Climate Partnership supports locally-led environmental monitoring and restoration projects, including documenting local observations of environmental change over time. A top priority of the Partnership is workforce development thus all field projects are centered around paid work opportunities, mentorship, and training for local residents and Tribal citizens.
